Thailand Education Visa (ED)
The Non-Immigrant ED visa is issued for real study in Thailand: a language school, a university degree, or a course the consulate accepts, such as Muay Thai at an approved school. The first decision comes before any paperwork: get the visa inside Thailand or through a consulate abroad.

Language school
Thai or English classes. The consulate looks at the school licence, the syllabus and the number of study hours.

University
Bachelor, master or exchange programs. With a proper acceptance letter these cases usually raise fewer questions.

Muay Thai and courses
The gym needs a letter from the relevant Ministry of Education authority or a relevant organisation such as the Sports Authority of Thailand. Plenty of well-known gyms cannot get one.
The ED visa is for people who will actually study
There is one basis for this visa: study at a Thai institution or on a program that the specific consulate or Thai Immigration accepts. They check enrolment, payment and the program itself, and after arrival they can check attendance too.
A good fit if
- you are enrolled at a Thai school or university that can issue visa documents;
- you plan to attend classes on schedule;
- your acceptance letter shows dates, the syllabus and school contacts;
- you or a sponsor can show the funds the consulate or school asks for.
Not a fit if
- study is only an excuse for the visa;
- you are in Thailand with fewer than 25 days left on your current stay;
- you want to work: the ED visa does not allow employment;
- your visa history already shows several ED cycles without real study.
Two routes: inside Thailand or at a consulate abroad
The route sets the timeline, the document list and whose financial rules apply. That is why we start every case by asking where you will get the visa, and only then talk about documents.
Inside Thailand
That is the practical minimum in our practice as of September 2026. You are already in the country legally and switch to a study basis. If you arrived visa-free, count the days: since 15 September 2026 most such entries give 30 days at most, so the margin is thin.
- Check your stamp
If fewer than 25 days are left on your current permission to stay, this route is risky or already closed.
- Pick a school and a program
The school has to be able to issue visa documents, and the program has to be real, with a schedule and hours.
- The school prepares the file
Acceptance letter, school registration documents, syllabus and proof of payment.
- Permission letter
The school obtains it from the Thai Ministry of Education.
- File for ED status
At this stage your Thai address and TM30 registration are checked.
At a consulate abroad
An average, not a promise. In high season it can take up to a month, and the preparation still starts in Thailand.
- Enrol with a school
The school assembles your documents in Thailand.
- Get the Ministry of Education letter
This is the step people skip most often. Without it, filing abroad may not be possible.
- Be outside Thailand
Confirm in advance that the consulate in that country accepts applicants in your situation.
- Apply at the consulate or via e-Visa
Review takes about 10 days on average, and the consulate can ask for more documents.
How long you can stay and what it costs
The visa itself is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. After that, your stay is extended at Thai Immigration in cycles that follow the program, and Immigration confirms the length and conditions of each extension. Every 90 days of continuous stay you file a 90-day report, which is free on time and carries a 2,000 THB fine when late.

What we do and what the consulate decides

Which is faster, in Thailand or abroad?
Abroad looks faster on paper: about 10 days of review versus at least 25 days inside the country. The Ministry of Education letter still has to be obtained in Thailand first, so the total time is rarely shorter.
I am flying in visa-free. Is there time to get the ED visa in Thailand?
Only just. On 15 September 2026 Thailand scrapped its 60-day visa exemption. Passports on the new unilateral list now get up to 30 days, and Russian citizens also get up to 30 days under a bilateral agreement. The in-country route needs at least 25 days, so pick the school before you fly or apply at a consulate once the Ministry of Education letter is ready. Whether you can switch to ED from a visa-exempt stamp depends on your case and on the immigration office. If you entered before 15 September, you keep the date in your stamp.
Can I work on an ED visa?
No. The ED visa gives no right to work. A job in Thailand needs a Non-B visa and a separate work permit.
Do they really check attendance?
Yes. Immigration can check attendance and schools report absences. For language schools and gyms, missed classes can lead to the visa being cancelled.
Can a parent pay for my studies?
Yes. A sponsored file adds the sponsor bank statement, a sponsorship letter, the sponsor passport, proof of relationship and translations where required.
